Why is there no option to download other people’s creations and play them in offline mod?
I just got into Dreams and I am having a blast creating and playing creations! But there’s something that conserves me; the game lacks an option to download other people’s creations locally to the PS4’s hard drive. This makes it not possible to play the many creations I love in offline mode. My internet service has limits, including a limited data plan. Playing the games works fine without any lags, but my internet is shared with my family members who rely heavily on it, especially during these times. And I also rely on it for my classes. So I can’t always play the creations in Dreams. I know you can remix some scenes and elements if the creator allows it, but not everything is remixable. And this also worries me a bit because one day when the servers are down, you won’t be able to play the great and wonderful creations that many talented people made. And since there's no way to download creations, it won’t be possible to preserve every game made. Also, some creations get taken down and hence, will no longer be playable. So this adds another value to backing up other people's creations locally.
Little Big Planet on PSP and vita had the option to download other’s levels for offline play. Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 also lets you download levels locally, so why can't we do the same in Dreams? I can assume that it prevents other people from downloading and reuploading creations as their own. But there must be a way to disable the player from uploading downloaded creations from other creators. So, my question is, why can’t we download other people’s creations and play them offline? And is it possible to ad the ability to do so in the future? I hope the creators of Dreams takes this into consideration.
I think it's just not playable? If that creation was linked to by collections and such, the link is still there but dark and unclickable.
Yeah could be a good feature to add for people with spotty internet. Though maybe that would be a problem for when something needs to be moderated but Mm can't guarantee it's not still stored offline by thousands of people? Don't know...
@TAPgiles: Thanks for your reply. It's relieving to know that playing the games doesn't take much downloading data from the internet. I know there was a Mario fan game in Dreams that was taken down by Nintendo due to copyright rights issues. Since creations cannot be taken down, is it really removed from the servers, or is it just not playable? Also, the only little thing that concerns me is if my internet connection is not working one day and the only dreams I can play in offline mode are my own, the remixable games, and Mm's preinstalled games. That would be another good reason to be able to download creations. But I'm not too worried about it now as before.
The answer to your question is, because it has not been implemented. 😅
The good news is, Dreams is designed in such a way that the download for any scene is very small, so even on internet connections that are slow you should still be able to play, and downloading the data is fast. When you see the bokeh while waiting for a scene, it's actually using that already-downloaded data to build the level ready to play. So the time to download is usually very small.
Once someone releases a creation they cannot take it down. This is to avoid breaking other things that link to it. So that's not an issue.
Mm and Sony have a "10 year plan" for Dreams, so the servers won't be going down any time soon. Maybe by that time they'll allow things to be downloaded, and it would be a reasonable feature to add. But for right now I don't think it's too urgent.
