Text Displayers Altered by Collaborators Become Unreliable
When a collaborator alters a previously existing text displayer and then saves a creation, the original creator opens up the creation, they will often see the old text still.
New viewers seem to have a semi-random chance as to which version will appear, but with the old text slightly more likely.
This has been a constant struggle for those of us collaborating on projects.
We submit into evidence:
I asked Sebastian to save a basic creation with the text "Sebastian wrote this". He then added me as a collaborator, and I altered the text to say "Andy wrote this". When Sebastian viewed the file afterwards, he saw his original text.
The creation is: https://indreams.me/scene/dUasYmXdaLD
It's currently private, but we can release it as public if that helps.
PS I think this may have been acknowledged back in EA, but I can't find those old posts any more, so I'm being erring on being proactive. Apologies if you're already on it!
The ability to work with a global team has been a very power part of Dreams' appeal. I know Team Pig Detective isn't the only group doing it.
I'm really hoping this problem can be sorted out eventually. Granting us greater control over text displayer's language settings would be great.
But in the meantime, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain the issue. We'll do our best to work around it for now. :-)
Oh interesting! So it seems there is already some multi-language support under the hood which is already kicking in and actually messing things up because we don't have direct control over it? That gives me hope that multi-language will come officially to the gadget :D
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, unfortunately it would seem the reason this is occurring is because you're using different versions of English as defined by the region game that you are using, Sebastian will be using English UK and you will be on English US (note that this cannot be changed in the game, as the US game will always be using English US regardless of if your system is set to US or UK English).
There is a work around, though it means that only users utilsing the same language will be able to change text displayers, as other language users will see text displayers specifically for their language, think of it as a pseudo-localisation.
Note that it is not contained to just create mode as well, if you set up a text displayer and have yourself set text to Andy and Sebastian goes into the same level and sets the text to Sebastian, users on US English will see Andy, and users on UK English will see Sebastian, alternatively if Sebastian's language was set to German when he changed the text, German users will see Sebastian.
I hope that this explains the very confusing situation that you’re in, we do hope to improve it in the future.
I'm in America, playing in English. Sebastian is in Germany, but his language settings are set to English (possibly UK, he's away right now and not sure if there's a difference in game).
Hi @AndymationB and @SebastianTeamPD
This sounds incredibly frustrating, I have a question which may seem a bit weird, however I might be able to figure out why you're seeing the problem that you are.
Could I please ask, what Language do you play in and what version of the game are you running, i.e. European, American, Asian, Japanese, and with the collaborators that you're working with, what are they running also, sorry if it sounds like a weird question, I hope to get to the bottom of your issue :)
I appreciate you guys looking into it. It's a very prevalent bug for us, so I'm not sure what it is that we're doing differently.
When opening our scene https://indreams.me/scene/dUasYmXdaLD is there no way to search for both text strings to see where bogus info could be hiding? Or is this more likely a local memory problem?
Hello again Andy.
Thank you for keeping us updated on this issue. Unfortunately we have been able to recreate this issue. Even when overwriting an other collaborators saves we found the text box edits were all in the Versions & Release section of the creation.
We will of course keep this issue in mind and if anything else happens that makes it clearer when this specifically happens please keep us updated.
We are each seeing our own version of the text despite adding other updates to the scene.
I tried editing it:
And then Sebastian checked out the file as well:
It shows him as saving it publicly, but he released it afterwards so you can take a look.
I'm sorry this is so hard to pin down. But it happens to us on almost every collaboration, so it would be really appreciated if we can find a solution. 🙏
Hey Andy thanks for getting back to us and uploading this.
We have tried following the steps you laid out and have been unable to get this issue to happen.
Does it occur with any other updates made to the scene. For example if after editing the text the collaborator adds something else to the scene does the text remain unedited with the new addition?
I`ve released the creation as public: https://indreams.me/scene/dUasYmXdaLD
Our QA team have looked into this but have not been able to reproduce the issue. They have asked if you are able to release your creation as public so that we can look further into this issue :)
Bump. This bug is extremely annoying and it brough with it a BUNCH of headaches when I worked on my game. I didn't know it was a bug until much later, when I noticed the title of the game (which used text boxes) looked COMPLETELY different to another collab than for myself. Whatever is causing this, needs to be fixed ASAP
